A total of 850 000 Bulgarians cast their ballots for parties that failed to overcome the 4% election threshold in the country’s general election last week, according to newly released data.
The total number of Bulgarians who turned up to vote was 3 541 745, which translates into a fairly low general turnout of about 50%.
No fewer than 38 parties and 8 coalitions took part in the Bulgarian general election.
The Social Democratic Party scored worst, winning merely 1 300 votes (0.037%).
Several parties, including the nationalist National Front for Salvation of Bulgaria and the Bulgaria for Citizens Movement of former European Commissioner Meglena Kuneva, finished the race close to the 4% threshold.
Results from the May 12 early general elections show that four Bulgarian parties made their way to Bulgaria's Parliament.
They are: the center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party of former Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, and their self-proclaimed arch enemies - the far-right nationalist Ataka (Attack).
According to the final CEC count – GERB + Ataka will have together 120 seats and DPS + BSP – another 120 in the 240-seats unicameral Parliament.
