Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Boyko Borisov, leader of the center-right party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB), has said the formation will request a cancellation of the results of the May 12 parliamentary elections.
Borisov gave a press conference on Thursday, four days after the general elections.
Borisov noted the step was unprecedented, adding that for the first time in history a political party which had won the elections would ask the Constitutional Court to cancel the election results.
The leader of GERB explained the step with the overnight raid of the prosecuting authority and the State Agency for National Security (DANS) at the Konstinbrod printing house on the eve of Election Day.
He claimed that the operation had triggered a serious breach of electoral silence on the day of reflection, adding that it was best to hold new elections.
Borisov voiced hopes that the Constitutional Court would come up with a statement as soon as possible.
He said that the current configuration of four parties in the 42nd Parliament could not form a stable government because the Bulgarian Socialist Party, nationalist party Ataka and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party had conflicting views on key issues such as the Belene NPP project and a potential tax hike.
The leader of GERB argued that the only point of agreement between the parties was the plan to take a huge loan and spend it within a year and a half, adding that if the scenario took place, even God would not be able to save Bulgaria.
Borisov made clear that if the Constitutional Court rejected GERB's motion for the cancelation of election results, the center-right party would propose an expert cabinet.
He further claimed that GERB's victory at the May 12 parliamentary elections was a true estimate of the achievements of the GERB government during the past 4 years in office.
Borisov emphasized that the 97 seats won by GERB at the parliamentary elections were more than the 84 seats of BSP, "whichever way you look at it."
He boasted that GERB had been supported by the young and well-educated Bulgarians.
