Bulgaria's prosecuting authority has terminated pre-trial proceedings against the three Bulgarian doctors involved in a 2010 scandal concerning a baby's death.

The case gained notoriety as then-Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov blamed the death of a newborn at the hospital in Gorna Oryahovitsa on the three doctors, reading transcripts from wiretapped conversations between the medics in Parliament in end-November 2010.

Four days ahead of the May 12 general elections, the District Prosecutor's Office in Veliko Tarnovo terminated the pre-trial proceedings due to the lack of evidence of a crime.

According to the media statement of the prosecuting authority, the case materials, including witness testimony, information acquired through the deployment of special surveillance equipment in connection with another pre-trial procedure, as well as the conclusions of the two medical expert reports, lead to the conclusion that the baby was born brain dead yet showed signs of life.

The doctors mistook the stillborn for a living baby.

According to the Veliko Tarnovo District Prosecutor's Office, the three doctors, Stefan Lazarov, Katya Getsova, Mihail Milatovitch, and the director of the maternity ward, Dimitar Sotirov, cannot be held accountable for the death of the stillborn.
