The center GERB party of former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, which narrowly won Sunday’s general election in Bulgaria, will have 98 seats in the country’s 240-seat Parliament, according to an expert.

With 96% of votes already counted, the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) is set to obtain 86 seats in Parliament, according to Prof. Krasimir Kalinov, a member of the Central Electoral Committee.

The ultranationalist Ataka (Attack) would have 23 MPs, while the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms would have 33 seats.

Kalinov has noted that 45% of the ballots cast by Bulgarians abroad are yet to be counted, which means that a difference of one or two seats may emerge when the final results are announced.

He stated that BSP and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms might be able to form a coalition government.

Kalinov told the Bulgarian National Radio that no other parties would reach the 4% election threshold and enter Parliament.

GERB won approximately 30.7% of the vote on Sunday, but appears unlikely to be able to form a new government, as all other parties have already declared that they would not support the center-right outfit.

Borisov’s GERB Cabinet resigned amid massive protests triggered by poverty and corruption in February, prompting early elections.
