Dimitar Dimitrov, one of the seven desperate Bulgarians who set themselves ablaze in poverty-stricken Bulgaria, has declared that he would not vote in Sunday’s general elections.
“I will not vote, I do not have anyone to vote for,” Dimitrov has told reporters.
The 52-year-old blacksmith said he did not believe any party was willing to “do something for the people.”
“It was my sign of protest, a sign that nothing was happening and no one was paying attention to the ordinary people,” Dimitrov told bTV, referring to his self-immolation in March.
A total of seven people set themselves on fire in EU’s poorest member state since mid-February. Five of them passed away.
The center-right GERB government of former PM Boyko Borisov resigned amid massive protests against corruption and poverty in February, prompting President Rosen Plevneliev to adjourn the Parliament, appoint a caretaker Cabinet and schedule snap elections for May 12.
Recent opinion polls indicate that GERB and the Bulgarian Socialist Party are nearly tied in Sunday’s vote.
