Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
The formerly-ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, is calling on the Central Electoral Commission, CEC, and the prosecution to investigate why and how one TV channel was able to severely violate the law during the day of reflection.
GERB is accusing TV7 and its director, journalist Nikolay Barekov, of committing a serious crime by spreading rumors on the day when any political propaganda is banned in the country with the goal to harm the party.
In the declaration, GERB stresses TV7 committed breaches of the Election Code and the professional and ethics code of Bulgarian media.
The declaration came in the aftermath of breaking news reported by the TV and Barekov that the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office is probing the case of some 350 000 suspected to be illegal ballots seized from a printing house in the western town of Kostinbrod.
The ballots, allegedly, were to be used to manipulate the vote in the early general elections on Sunday, May 12, to turn the results in favor of the centrist GERB.
The printing house is owned by Yordan Bonchev, municipal councilor in Kostinbrod from the center-right GERB, who is said to be close to GERB's Deputy Chair and former Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov.
GERB further notes that before the news about the ballots made headlines, also on the day of reflection, the same TV aired an interview with Sergey Stanishev, leader of their archrival, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, also in violation of the Election Code.
"The GERB political party demands a probe to establish if TV7 journalists have committed a crime. We ask CEC and the prosecution to immediately issue an official statement regarding the case," the complaint, addressed to CEC, the Supreme Prosecutor's Office of Cassations and the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, reads.
Yordan Bonchev is firm the said ballots had to be discarded over printing flaws and had to be kept in sealed packages at the printing house as the public tender rules postulated.

Ivan Portnih, candidate of Bulgaria’s formerly ruling center-right party GERB, has won the battle for mayor of the coastal city of Varna by a slim margin.
Two candidates are vying to be mayor of Bulgaria's third-largest city and summer capital, Varna on the Black Sea coast.
The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office final count of the alleged illegal ballots discovered at a printing house in Kostinbrod hours ahead of the May 12 early elections is 480 000.
The number of apparently illegally printed ballots for Bulgaria's May 12 early general elections has swollen to at least 400,000, according to an announcement by the prosecution.
Bulgaria's formerly-ruling, center-right GERB Party has sent its claim contesting and asking to void the May 12 early general elections results to all European institutions.
Bulgaria's Constitutional Court has decided to try the claim contesting and asking to void the May12 early general elections results.
