The first ever EUR banknote with an inscription in the Bulgarian language is entering in circulation Thursday.

It has a nominal value of EUR 5.

Until now, the signs on EUR bills were only in the Latin and Greek alphabets and the Cyrillic is used for the very first time.

The EUR 5 in Bulgarian is part of the new series of banknotes named Europe.

They have higher protection and a water sign and hologram with the image of Ancient Greek princess Europe, Standard daily writes Thursday.

Bulgaria is the only EU Member State to use the Cyrillic with over 200 million users across the globe.

The decision to use Bulgarian on the banknotes was provoked by a dispute on how to write the Bulgarian pronunciation of the EU currency – evro – in Latin, leading to the decision to use the Cyrillic as well.
