Ognian Zlatev took office as the new Head of the European Commission's Representation in Sofia on May 1 2013, the EC announced.
Zlatev has been working since 2011 as Head of Communication at the Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion. In this role he helped communicating effectively the Commission's actions to tackle youth unemployment and social inclusion, the EC said.
Zlatev has extensive professional experience in communication, media development and NGO management.
Before joining the European Commission, he served on the Managing Board of Bulgarian National Television (the public service broadcaster). Prior to that he founded and managed the Media Development Centre in Bulgaria and was a founding member and President of the South-East European Network for Professionalisation of the Media (SEENPM).
Other previous posts include Director of the Information Centre for the Open Society Institute in Sofia, Manager of the BBC Centre in Bulgaria and Exchange Officer at the British Council office in Bulgaria.
Zlatev brings to his new role a track record of working with media stakeholders and NGOs in Bulgaria and other south-eastern European countries, the EC said in its official statement.
It adds that he has a strong background in communication related to EU integration, EU policies and EU institutions.
The European Commission has Representations in all 27 EU Member States and Regional Offices in Barcelona, Belfast, Bonn, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Marseille, Milan, Munich and Wroc?aw.
They inform the media and public about EU policies and report to the European Commission on significant developments in the country.
The Representations are under the authority of Vice-President Viviane Reding.
