Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova attended Thursday the sod-turning ceremony for a subway section connecting the Mladost 1 residential district to Business Park Sofia.

The subway section is 5km long and has 4 subway stations, two underground and two above-ground, according to reports of private TV station bTV.

The construction of the tunnels of the underground and above-ground subway section started in February but the official sod-turning ceremony took place on April 25.

Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova made clear that the extension of the subway section from the Mladost 1 residential district to Business Park Sofia would alleviate traffic for over 30 000 Sofia citizens a day.

She apologized to residents of the Mladost 1 quarter for the inconvenience during the period of construction works, adding that the traffic along the Alexander Malinov Blvd would not be stopped but only redirected in one lane.

Fandakova explained that the Alexander Malinov Blvd would be two kilometers wider after the repair works, during which it would be equipped with new lighting and green spaces.
