At least 80 people have been killed and some 800 have been injured after an eight-storey building collapsed on the outskirts of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.

A total of 76 bodies have been recovered so far from the debris of the nine-storey Rana Plaza in Savar, near Dhaka.

The eight-storey building contained a clothing factory, a bank and several other shops. It collapsed during the morning rush hour, the BBC informs.

Thousands of local people have joined the rescue effort, disrupting the traffic on a highway near Rana Plaza. Four army teams have also joined the rescue operation, according to RIA Novosti.

The last major building collapse in Bangladesh was in 2010, when a four-storey building collapsed in Dhaka, killing at least 25 people and injuring several others. In 2005, there was a building collapse near the site of Wednesday's incident, killing 64 people.
