A Canadian paper has reported that a woman holding a Canadian passport was arrested in the Bulgarian capital Sofia last year, accused of being an Iranian agent monitoring a local Jewish center.

The story that an Iranian agent was allegedly arrested by Bulgarian authorities in Sofia after engaging in surveillance of the local Chabad center was initially reported by The Jerusalem Post on Monday.

The Canadian National Post has now cited an unnamed source as confirming that the arrested woman traveled to Bulgaria using a Canadian passport.

“She came to Canada in the mid-1990s from Iran and claimed refugee protection, a claim that was accepted and she was granted asylum in Canada. Later, she became a Canadian citizen, the source said, allowing her to travel on the widely respected Canadian passport,” the National Post article says.

The unidentified woman, in her 50s, allegedly arrived in Sofia from Istanbul a few weeks after the bus bombing in Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Burgas that killed five Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian bus driver.

In February, then-Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov stated that Bulgarian investigators had "a well-founded assumption" that the perpetrators of the deadly attack in Burgas belonged to the military formation of Hezbollah.
