Giorgio Napolitano has been re-elected for a second 7-year term as Italian President.

87-year-old Napolitano, whose first term in office expires on May 15, secured the necessary 504 votes in Parliament in the sixth round of voting on Saturday afternoon, according to reports of the BBC News.

Napolitano became the first president in Italian history to secure a second seven-year term.

Napolitano will be of crucial importance for the efforts to resolve the political stalemate in Italy left by February's inconclusive elections.

Italy's head of state is expected to facilitate the formation of a broad coalition government in a round of consultations with party chiefs starting next week.
