Bulgaria: 5-15 Confirmed Dead in Texas Explosion Remains of a fertilizer plant and other buildings and vehicles after the plant exploded in West, Texas, USA, 17 April 2013.

An estimated 5 to 15 people were killed in an explosion and fire that tore through a fertilizer plant in a small town north of Waco, Texas, according to police.

Sgt William Swanton of the Waco police department said at least 160 people had been treated at various hospitals after the blast.

Regarding the figure of five to 15 deaths, Swanton told reporters, "I know that's a rough estimate, but that's the best that I can give you."

But with a search still going on, other officials suggested the final toll could be significantly higher.

Emergency services are still going from home to home trying to find survivors, the BBC informs.

The explosion occurred at a facility of the plant which has been closed for renovation and repair works.

Emergency services officials said ammonia may have caused the explosion.
