A powerful explosion at a fertilizer plant in the town of West, Texas, on Wednesday evening, left scores of injured.

Firefighters fear that the death toll could rise as high as 60 to 70.

According to reports of the BBC News, the blast at the West Fertilizer plant was reported at 19:50 (00:50 GMT).

The blast happened in West, a town of about 2700 people located some 32km north of Waco.

The explosion, which destroyed some 10-15 buildings and damaged another 50, prompted a widescale evacuation in the community.

Unconfirmed reports said a nursing home had collapsed in the explosion and some people were believed trapped inside.

Firefighters, ambulances and six helicopters have been mobilised to deal with the situation.
