Hundreds are feared dead after the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that jolted Iran near the border with Pakistan.

"It was the biggest earthquake in Iran in 40 years and we are expecting hundreds of dead," an Iranian official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Reuters.

Iran's Press TV reported Tuesday that at least 40 people had been confirmed dead. At least 10 people have been reportedly killed in Pakistan.

A state of emergency has been declared in Iran’s Saravan area.

According to reports of the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake was 86km from the city of Khash. It had a depth of 15.2 kilometers.
