Bulgaria's unions of pensioners have issued a joint declaration against a controversial statement by previous PM Boyko Borisov that increased retirement pensions in 2009 contributed to the dwindling of Bulgaria's state reserve.

The statement was also criticized as "cynical" by various political oponents of Borisov, such as Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev and Bulgaria for Citizens leader Meglena Kuneva.

"It is improper for a recent PM to issue such divisive statements pitching one part of the population against another," said Kuneva.

"Our hopes for a reasonable election campaign were dashed by Borisov's cynical and ugly statement regarding pensioners," added she.

"We denounce the position of the former PM that the shrinking of Bulgaria's fiscal reserve is due to raise in pensions by the cabinet preceding his," stated the pensioners' unions.

"Using Borisov's logic, pensions should have remained at their 2008 levels, which were insufficient even for subsistence," added they.

According to the retirees, the former PM has led a "genocidal" policy regarding pensioners by neglecting their needs and not increasing pensions further.

"The former PM must give an account regarding where BGN 5 B from Bulgaria's fiscal reserve went. He ought not look for excuses elsewhere," added the statement.
