Special surveillance by police in Bulgaria is done at rates comparable to those in other European countries, stated Bulgarian Ministry of Interior chief secretary Kalin Georgiev.

Bulgaria's police, under previous Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who appointed Georgiev to the post, have been accused of inordinarily surveilling citizens.

Some, including Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev, have recently claimed that Tsvetanov has used information gathered by such spying to potentially pressure rivals.

According to Stanishev, during the 2009-13 term in office of the GERB cabinet Tsvetanov was part of, the phones of many influential political leaders and public figures were tapped.

Chief secretary Georgiev, speaking for the Bulgarian National Television, urged Bulgarian citizens to retain their trust in the polices.

"The police will not be able to work properly if we constantly question their work," said Georgiev.

He further assured that law enforcement officials will do everything in their power to ensure the proper conduct of May 12 early general elections.
