Half of Bulgaria's regional governors have requested leave effective Friday as they are engaged actively in campaigning for the May 12 snap general elections.

The election campaign officially started on April 12.

On April 2, Bulgarian caretaker PM Marin Raykov called on the governors of Bulgaria's regions who are affiliated with political parties to go on leave during the campaign.

"The situation ahead of elections is quite specific given the tense social climate in the country. I want you to concentrate on cooperating with central authorities for the successful holding of elections. All governors who are also party functionaries ought to step down for the period of elections, or else leave their party position. Regional authorities must send a clear message to the public that they are going to be unbiased," stated Raykov.

A total of 14 have complied with his request – those from the regions of Dobrich, Vidin, Kardzhali, Montana, Pazardzhik, Pleven, Plovdiv, Razgrad, Ruse, Sliven, Sofia, Targovishte, Haskovo, and Yambol.

Konstantin Grebenarov, Regional Governor of Burgas is also on leave, but this leave is not connected with the election campaign, the Cabinet's press office further informs.
