Levski Sofia’s first team players will not receive their wages until the end of the season, the Bulgarian giants’ chief executive Ivo Tonev stated on Friday.
The measure follows a string of poor performances that led to the resignation of coach Ilian Iliev late on Thursday.
Tonev clarified that the players would receive their wages at the end of the season “based on what they should receive and what they deserve.”
Iliev was replaced by his assistant Nikolay Mitov in a caretaker role until the end of the season.
Levski are currently second in the country’s top division and still stand a chance to win the title. However, the team’s recent uninspired draws with the likes of Montana and Pirin Gotse Delchev have drawn much criticism on behalf of the fans.
Disgruntled fans even set up a road blockade and tried to storm the club bus on the trip back to Sofia after the Pirin Gotse Delchev game on Wednesday.
