Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has urged parties not to resort to populism during the general elections campaign that was officially launched on Friday.

"I hereby call for responsible political campaigning," Plevneliev said in his speech.

"It is our responsibility to restore the people's trust."

The President warned all political parties against resorting to unrealistic promises.
Plevneliev also stated that mudslinging and black PR tactics would not lead to any positive results. He argued that people would be more impressed by a competition of ideas.

Plevneliev installed a caretaker government on March 12 after the resignation of the center-right GERB government that was triggered by massive protests against poverty, corruption and shockingly high utility bills.

Early general elections are to take place on May 12.
