Friday, April 12, marks the start of the general election campaign in Bulgaria.

A total of 38 political parties and 7 coalitions will take part in the May 12 early parliamentary elections, with the number of candidates for the 240-seat Parliament exceeding 7 200.

The deadline for election campaigning is May 10.

President Rosen Plevneliev installed a caretaker government on March 12 after the resignation of the center-right GERB government that was triggered by massive protests against poverty, corruption and shockingly high utility bills.

GERB would be leading the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, by 2.7% if the vote was to be held now, according to the latest poll.

Bulgarians abroad wishing to vote in the May 12 early general election had a deadline of April 11 to file an application to do so.
