Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev has stated that only his formation is capable of preventing the center-right GERB from returning to power.
The left-wing party officially presented its pre-election platform on Tuesday. During the event, Stanishev strongly criticized GERB’s national conference on Sunday, saying that it reminded him of conferences held under the Communist era.
GERB’s main message was “more of the same”, Stanishev argued.
The BSP leader noted that GERB would rather build highways than increase salaries, which he believes is against the will of the people.
“Let us return Bulgaria to the people,” he said, adding that his party’s goal is to make the country “prosperous, social and free again.”
On Sunday, former Prime Minister and GERB leader Boyko Borisov declared that “no other party than GERB” could prevent the “former communists” from taking over the country. He apparently referred to BSP.
Borisov and his GERB Cabinet resigned on February 21 amidst massive protest rallies against poverty, stagnation and political corruption. Snap general elections will be held on May 12, just two months ahead of the regularly scheduled date. BSP and GERB are believed to be the main contenders, with polls giving the center-right party a slight advantage.
