South Korean President Park Geun-hye has declared that her country will strike back if North Korea stages an attack on its territory.

Speaking to defense officials on Monday, the President declared that she took the series of threats from Pyongyang "very seriously".

"If there is any provocation against South Korea and its people, there should be a strong response in initial combat without any political considerations," Park said, as cited by the BBC.

North Korea said on Saturday it was entering a "state of war" with South Korea in response to what it termed the "hostile" military drills being staged in the South.

On Sunday, the US sent stealth fighters to South Korea, as North Korea pledged to build up its nuclear arsenal.
