UK Seeks Russia's Support on Iraq

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair will hold further talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday to try to win his support for a tough UN resolution to deal with Iraq. Mr Blair has already made clear that he intends to address Mr Putin's concerns that war with Iraq would have a detrimental economic impact on Russia. The Russian leader has opposed UK and US calls for the international community to threaten military action against Baghdad if Iraq does not fully co-operate with UN weapons inspectors. As the two leaders prepared to meet for the second time in two days, the US Senate voted to grant US President George W Bush the authority to launch an attack on Iraq, which Washington accuses of developing weapons of mass destruction.
