The auction for the expensive Rolex watch of Bulgaria's Plovdiv metropolitan bishop Nikolay fell through as bidders failed to show up Sunday.

The trustees of the St. Marina church in Plovdiv will have to decide on whether to hold a second auction later, stated a representative..

Bishop Nikolay moved to auction his notorious watch to cover the church's electricity bills.

The start price for the Rolex was set at BGN 11,600, or some EUR 6,000.

People had expressed interest in the watch before the auction, but the strong media interest in the case might have discouraged bidders, writes the Focus Information Agency.

Plovdiv bishop Nikolay is the youngest metropolitan bishop in the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and is known for his hardline stance in matters of religion.
