The number of persons who died in road accidents in Bulgaria in 2012 is the lowest since 1963, announced the Interior Ministry on Friday.

A total of 601 people perished in road crashes in Bulgaria last year, down by 56 compared with 2011, and down by 460 since the peak in 2008.

The number of those injured in road accidents is also declining – a total of 8 193 in 2012, down by 108 compared with 2011.

"The new data indicates that we are going in the right direction with our measures," Bulgaria's Deputy Interior Minister Dimitar Georgiev stated after chairing a meeting of the Ministry's road safety committee.
