European Peoples' Party group leader Joseph Daul has expressed his strong support for Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, who resigned on Wednesday, and his center-right GERB party.
"Making the decision to resign is never easy. This requires the strength of a statesman," Daul has said in a statement.
"This is the first Bulgarian government has the courage to implement reforms," Daul has claimed.
He has further argued that, despite the exceptional economic and financial crisis, the GERB government has made considerable efforts and succeeded in securing the European development of the Balkan country.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov made the shocking announcement Wednesday that his cabinet is to resign en masse around noon. The move follows a tumultuous week of public anger over rising electricity prices, corruption and austerity measures that ignited mass protests nationwide.
The resignation was accepted by the Bulgarian Parliament Thursday.
