Bulgaria Grapples with Soaring Corruption Rates: New Report Reveals Shocking Data
Corruption in Bulgaria has soared to its third highest peak in history, according to a recent report by the Center for the Study of Democracy
Bulgaria's government had no other choice but to resign and quell mass protests, according to former EU commissioner Meglena Kuneva.
"Boyko Borisov chose the only possible way out of the situation. In recent weeks, thousands of Bulgarians took to the streets to express their discontent, their offense and their anger," said Meglena Kuneva, leader of Bulgaria for Citizens party and first and former European Commissioner shortly after the government resigned.
"We are fully aware that the resignation will not improve the dire economic situation of the Bulgarian people, which deteriorated over the past three and a half years, but we hope that it will make the situation calmer," said Kuneva.
According to her what happened is a good lesson for anyone who decides to underestimate the power of civil society.
Bulgaria needs a caretaker government, Kuneva said and called on the parties in parliament to give up the mandates they are going to receive.
