Violence Marks Elections in Kashmir

Gunfighting that left three people dead has marred the resumption of elections in Kashmir. The latest attack came as a fourth and final phase of legislative elections began, leaving two Indian paramilitary soldiers and a suspected militant dead after a group of separatists violently took control of a polling station, police said. Despite the violence, undeterred voters are expected to attend polling booths in large numbers. While the voting is held under a shadow of violence, election officials are confident of a 60 percent voter turnout -- far higher than the 41 percent participation rate in the three earlier rounds of polling.
