Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov did not agree to be recruited as a secret informant by Bulgaria's anti-mafia unit back in the 1990s, police officials claimed on Monday.
"There are no documents indicating an agreement on behalf of the aforementioned individual to be recruited as an informant," Bulgaria's Chief Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime (GDBOP) said in a statement.
The statement followed came in response to a leaked document released by the site for investigative journalism Bivol.bg on Sunday, which reveals that current Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, was recruited in the past as a secret agent of the Central Services for Combatting Organized Crime, CSBOP (now GDBOP) back in 1996. Borisov's alleged codename was Buddha.
The proposal for Borisov's recruitment was based on his "decriminalizing behavior," and his ties with suspected mafia bosses.
No documents have been discovered suggesting that Borisov worked as an informant, GDBOP said Monday.
However, GDBOP's statement also suggests that documents have been found proposing that Borisov be discharged as an informant, as he was not in contact with relevant criminal circles.
