Bulgaria's Interior Ministry sending just eight policemen to an event where over 2 000 people are expected to gather is outrageous.

The statement was made by Hristo Biserov, Deputy Chairman of Bulgaria's ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, at the official emergency press conference of the party in the capital Sofia Sunday, in connection with the attack on the life of Ahmed Dogan, who until Saturday was the DPS leader and is now its honorary Chairman.

Biserov, like newly elected party leader, Lyutvi Mestan, accused the police and the National Security Services, NSO, of fleeing from responsibility in failing to carry out their duty to guard a political leader.

The DPS Deputy Chairman added the party sent in advance two letters to the Interior and NSO, asking them to provide security for the caucus.

"They are mandated to organize enough surveillance in what was going one in the hall. The police sent 7 uniform employees and this is outrageous. 2 000 people came and they were nowhere to be seen. There was an execution attempt against a political leader and there was no one to detain the perpetrator," Biserov said.

He noted it was the delegates, not the police, who detained the attacker and took the gun from him.

"There was a gun, and this is all that matters. There is no evidence the perpetrator knows guns well and knows how to use them," Biserov stressed.

He explained the party was not going to say who exactly failed to carry out their duty since other authorities have the right and the job to do so.

On Saturday, police in Bulgaria detained a man after he pointed a gun at Dogan  as he was delivering a speech in the capital Sofia. No shots were fired. The man was identified as Oktay Enimehmedov, a 25-year-old ethnic Turkish resident of the city of Burgas, with a previous criminal record for assault and theft.

At the press conference, Mestan labeled the intentions of the investigation to probe delegates of the party's caucus for battery "cynical," stressing they were the once to successfully fight off a potential killer and to save the life of their leader.

He underscored these delegates must be congratulated for their courage and for doing the job of the police who took an hour and a half  after the attack to arrive at the scene of the incident.

At the beginning of the conference, Mestan voiced outrage from the shift of focus regarding the murder attempt in presenting it as an individual act of a man who only wanted his moment of glory.

He also informed the party will ask for an international probe in the incident they are convinced was an attempt for political murder. The incident will also be included as grounds for the non-confidence vote against the Cabinet to be tabled by DPS in upcoming days.

Earlier Sunday, Sofia City Prosecutor, Nikolay Kokinov, announced the man who attacked Dogan with a gas pistol during a televised speech will be charged with grave hooliganism and death threat.
