Staged murders are murders despite their outcome, according to Lyutvi Mestan, the new leader of Bulgaria's ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms.
Mestan, who was elected at the post one day ago, made the statement at the official emergency press conference of the party in the capital Sofia Sunday afternoon in connection with the attack on the life of Ahmed Dogan, who until Saturday was the DPS leader and is now its honorary Chairman.
He noted the act of hooliganism committed by an individual with a handgun is a murder attempt and all other charges are simply replacement of the truth.
"I would be the happiest politician if this attack is interpreted actually as an attack on democracy in Bulgaria, not just an attack against Dogan, but I am deeply disappointed in seeing how far away we still are from such maturity of democracy," Mestan stated.
On Saturday, police in Bulgaria detained a man after he pointed a gun at Dogan as he was delivering a speech in the capital Sofia. No shots were fired. The man was identified as Oktay Enimehmedov, a 25-year-old ethnic Turkish resident of the city of Burgas, with a previous criminal record for assault and theft.
At the press conference, Mestan labeled the intentions of the investigation to probe delegates of the party's caucus for battery "cynical," stressing they were the ones to successfully fight off a potential killer and to save the life of their leader.
He underscored these delegates must be congratulated for their courage and for doing the job of the police who took an hour and a half after the attack to arrive at the scene of the incident.
At the beginning of the conference, Mestan voiced outrage from the shift of focus regarding the murder attempt in presenting it as an individual act of a man who only wanted his moment of glory.
He also informed the party will ask for an international probe in the incident they are convinced was an attempt for political murder.
