Bulgaria was eliminated from the quarterfinals of the Volleyball Championships after a defeat from the team of host Argentina. Before a crowd of more than 10,000 in Buenos Aires, Argentina put an end to Bulgaria's surprising success story in group G, 25-20, 22-25, 25-14, 25-19. The match turned to be most electrifying match, featuring the tournament's two highest scorers, Vladimir Nikolov of Bulgaria and Argentina's Marcos Milinkovic. Nikolov kept his first place among the top scorers ranking with a total of 118 points. He is followed closely by Milinkovic, who is just one point back. On Friday defending champion Italy had to battle five hard sets to beat a stubborn Bulgaria. The Italians won 31-33, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 15-13 in Buenos Aires. Portugal, Argentina, Russia and Italy advanced to the quarterfinals of the Volleyball Championships after winning their second round matches Saturday. Japan, Spain and Poland were eliminated. The Japanese men, who last reached the quarterfinals in 1982 when they finished fourth, will play Bulgaria on Sunday with a victory giving them ninth place in the final standings. Elsewhere, in group K, Greece upset an undefeated United States squad in a wild overtime match 20-25, 25-5, 25-20, 15-25, 17-15.
