Bulgaria's liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms party is convening at an important national conference Saturday, on which they will elect a leader.
In the days before the congress, rumors spread that controversial MRF leader Ahmed Dogan, who has chaired the party since its inception in 1990, might finally withdraw from leadership.
Party sources have tried to dispel the rumors, and Dogan has been re-nominated as leader by 23 out of the Movement's 28 regional councils.
The leader election is scheduled for 6 pm, and one Dogan's possible heirs is believed to be current MRF vice-chair Lyutvi Mestan.
Among the key points in the Movement's congress, taking place at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, is expected to be Ahmed Dogan's report to the party.
The report is to touch on the strategy of the party, known to be supported by Bulgaria's sizeable Turkish minority, for the upcoming general elections in the summer.
The congress is also to formulate the Movement for Rights and Freedoms' position on the January 27 national referendum on nuclear energy.
