Leftist Candidate Likely to Win Brazil Election

World | October 6, 2002, Sunday // 00:00

Leftist candidate Luiz Inacio da Silva, known by his fellow Brazilians simply as Lula, appears poised to win the presidency on his fourth try as up to 115 million people in Latin America's largest country go to the polls Sunday. With stagnant growth, high crime rates, falling wages and unemployment near 10 percent, polls show support for Lula rising above 40 percent, far outpacing his nearest opponents. The 56-year-old former steelworker and union leader can win the presidency outright with a majority Sunday. If he fails to gain a majority, Lula, the candidate of the Workers' Party, will face the second-place candidate in a runoff in two weeks. Three candidates are battling for that slot: Jose Serra, backed by the ruling center-right coalition; Anthony Garotinho, former governor of Rio de Janeiro state; and Ciro Gomes, former governor of Ceara state.
