Bulgarian TV, Cable Operators Put Off Feud till after Holidays

Major Bulgarian TV network bTV will temporarily continue to be aired on the country's cable network operators till January 2, 2013, announced the television.

The news comes after a trade dispute between the two sides left thousands of Bulgarian viewers without access to bTV's channels.

bTV will resume its cable transmissions starting 4 pm Sunday until January 2, after which the two sides will attempt to straighten their dispute.

Saturday bTV Media Group and TV7 requested major cable operator Bulsatcom to stop delivering their programs on its network, citing breach of contract by failing to pay dues and quoting a lower than real number of users to reduce fees,

In response the 21-member Bulgarian Association of Cable Communication Operators (BACCO) announced it will have to suspend bTV and TV7 from their programs, as their actions constituted a cessation of contract.

bTV's Sunday announcement that it will temporarily continue cable transmission for the holidays was motivated in the interest of viewers.

"The compulsory package of all 6 bTV channels without options for buying rights on one or several of them, as well as new, unfulfillable conditions and now transparent fee with clear price-formation principles, are the reasons for the dispute," BACCO stated.

The Association also added that bTV's new requirements could result in cable operators being forced to up prices for end users.

New contracts between BACCO members and the TV channels for 2013 are yet to be negotiated.
