The project for the construction of a thermal power plant just several kilometers away from Turkey's border with Bulgaria has been stopped.
The announcement came at an economic forum taking place in Bulgaria's Black Sea city of Burgas.
Igneada Mayor Tahir Isik, as cited by Darik radio, explained that the project for the construction of a thermal power plant in the region of Igneada had been stopped.
Isik and his colleagues from the municipalities of Vize and Demirkoy declared their firm opposition to the energy project.
The mayors explained that the construction of the thermal power plant near Igneada was a project of private investors, not of the government.
Isik made clear that the Turkish Environment Minister had backed the protesting citizens, refusing to back the project, as a result of which it was no longer on the agenda.
The Turkish mayors, however, refused to comment allegations about the planned construction of a nuclear power plant near Igneada, saying that the issue involved Turkey's official governmental policy and called for a discussion at another level.
The guests explained that they had received no information about plans of the Turkish government to build a NPP near the small Black Sea Turkish town.
Igneada is a town of some 2 000 inhabitants, located 5 km south of the Rezovska (Rezovo) River, which marks the Bulgarian-Turkish border.
On November 8, Bulgarian media reported that a private Turkish company planned to build a 1200 MW TPP running on imported coal in the town of Igneada.
The TPP project near the Bulgarian-Turkish border was initially said to be a nuclear power plant project, but the Turkish government officially rejected the allegations.
