A Russian official has said for the first time that the Syrian government may be defeated by opposition forces.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces are "losing more and more control and territory", Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Thursday.

BBC has reminded that Russia has been one of the staunchest international allies of Mr Assad's government.

"Unfortunately, we cannot rule out the victory of the Syrian opposition," the diplomat has said.

"The greatest danger is that parts of Syria continue to fall under the control of the opposition where extremists, terrorists, and al-Qaeda have strong positions," Bogdanov has also said, adding that it could have very serious consequences.

"Everyone is afraid of that, including our American partners."

More than 100 nations, including the United States and Western European countries, declared their support for the opposition coalition on Wednesday at a gathering in Marrakech, Morocco.
