At least 7 people are feared missing after the Sasogo tunnel, Japan's largest, has suffered a significant structure collapse.

Large concrete slabs fell from the tunnel's roof on a 100 m section of the tunnel Sunday morning, trapping cars and starting a fire.

A number of fire engines and ambulances flocked to the area on the major Chuo highway, some 80 km west of Tokyo.

The 4.3 km long Sasogo tunnel is Japan's longest and one of the most heavily used.

There is still no information about what might have caused the collapse.
