The World Bank has sounded an alarm over the headlong fall in Bulgaria's demography and its gloomy implications in economic terms.

The burden on the social security system is getting heavier and these additional expenses may rise to account for 2.3% of GDP, the experts have warned at a conference in Sofia.

The number of working Bulgarians marks a sharp decrease and is expected to contract by 45% in fifty years.

Word Bank estimates show that by 2050 every fifth worker on Bulgaria's labor market will be of Roma origin.

"The state can do many things to make these people more efficient," the bank experts believe.

Among the major problems plaguing Bulgaria the World Bank experts singled out volatile business environment and lack of sufficient investments in innovations and energy efficient industries.
