Bulgaria's high clergy will elect the country's new Orthodox Patriarch within the next four months, it has been made clear after 98-year-old Patriarch Maxim passed away on Tuesday.
The Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church will select three candidates aged over fifty and with an experience of at least five years.
The patriarchal election council will then elect one of them, theology expert Ivan Zhelev has told reporters.
Zhelev has also revealed that the funeral of Patriarch Maxim will take place this weekend.
Patriarch Maxim was the oldest Primate of Orthodox Church Patriarchs around the world, and he was at the helm for a record-long 41 years.
He died shortly before 4 am on Tuesday after spending a month in the Governmental Hospital in Sofia including several days on life support.
