Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) is to appoint Tuesday an interim Chief Prosecutor after last week's resignation of Boris Velchev.

Velchev left office after a decree signed by President Rosen Plevneliev for his appointment as a member of the Constitutional Court.

Two candidates are said to be vying for the post of interim Chief Prosecutor, according to reports of dnevnik.bg, Boyko Naydenov, who was recently reelected as head of Bulgaria's National Investigation Service, and Deputy Chief Prosecutor Valeri Parvanov.

VSS is also expected to discuss the rules of procedure for the appointment of a successor to Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev.

The procedure for the appointment of a new Chief Prosecutor is to start Thursday, with VSS holding two consecutive sessions on the matter, after which the concrete nominations will be received.

The magistrates said to be competing for the post of Chief Prosecutor are said to be Plovdiv District Court Chair Sotir Tsatsarov, Deputy Chief Prosecutor Galina Toneva, and Sofia City Prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov.

To be nominated, a candidate needs the support of at least five VSS members.
