Will Bulgaria Have a Stable Government After Yet Another Election in June? Our Readers Have Spoken
On our Facebook page, readers were asked about Bulgaria's stability after the June elections
"The clash between EPP and PES will take place in Bulgaria during the summer of 2013."
These are the words with which Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov, leader of Bulgaria's largest EPP-affiliated party GERB, began and closed his address at the EPP congress in Bucharest.
Borisov was referring to Bulgaria's upcoming general elections, which will pitch his GERB against main opposition force, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, led by Sergey Stanishev.
"You know, PES chose for its leader Bulgaria's former PM Stanishev, whom we brought down from power in 2009," explained the current PM at the forum.
This might look as a misguided and egocentric attempt at provincialization of European politics.
But it actually shows that there is a prime opportunity for both sides of Bulgaria's political spectrum to broaden up their (often sorry) debate and not only make it more European, but also start filling it with more substance.
Of course, this might also not work out.
For too long have Boyko and Sergey habituated themselves to exchanging quips that sound much like those of two sulky boys quarreling.
Tradition has it that Borisov's most used word is "I", the second being... "Stanishev."
