Bulgaria: Have Bulgarians Sobered Up?

Bulgarians' distrust for the Borisov Cabinet is unusually strong for the first time since it took over in 2009, according to an Alpha Research public opinion poll.

For the first time the Bulgarians who disapprove of PM Boyko Borisov (37%) are more than those who approve of him.

Over 70% of the respondents said they were unhappy with Borisov's economic, social, healthcare, and income policies

Yet, there's one positive grade for the ruling party GERB – on infrastructure development; Regional Minister Lilyana Pavlova's ratings have seen a boost.

That's hardly surprising given the government's policy whose priority for the past three years has been infrastructure.

Borisov and GERB have chosen to build highways rather than work to raise salaries, pensions, maternity payments, boost employment or tackle corruption.

What was the Borisov Cabinet going to tell their voters had they failed in their infrastructure projects?

The Alpha Research poll doesn't signify a Doomsday scenario for GERB yet. That will come at Bulgaria's general elections next year.

The poll only shows that a larger part of Bulgarians have sobered up from "a nation's drunkenness" (to use a popular quote from Bulgarian literature) that had set in with the start of Borisov's rule.
