Bulgarian investigators will travel to Spain in order to interrogate the detained crew of the Bulgarian vessel Sveti Nikolay (Saint Nikolay), which was captured with 3 metric tons of cocaine in August, announced Borislav Sarafov, head of Bulgaria's Specialized Appellate Prosecutor's Office.
Sarafov revealed the Bulgarian investigators will be going to Spain in October 2012, and will also exchange information and evidence about the case.
"It is essential for the Bulgarian side to collect all facts and evidence... We expect an objective attitude towards the case," the chief of the appellate office at Bulgaria's special anti-mafia prosecutor's office, as cited by Darik Radio.
All of the 21 Bulgarian sailors arrested onboard the cocaine-loaded Sveti Nikolay (Saint Nikolay) ship off the coast of Spain have been left in custody by the Spanish court until the investigation of the matter is wrapped up.
The 21 Bulgarian sailors face charges of crimes against public health. It is not clear yet how long the investigation will continue.
According to Spanish legislation, a person can spend up to two years in custody without a sentence and the term can be extended by another two years.
The trial against the Bulgarian sailors is taking place in Spain.
On August 13, the Sveti Nikolay vessel was intercepted off Spain's southern coast with 3 tons of cocaine from Venezuela onboard.
The Spanish authorities detained 31 people, including 21 Bulgarians.
