Parents to Sue Serbia over Lack of Bulgarian School Books
Parents in western Serbia, which has a large population of ethnic Bulgarians, are threatening to sue the Serbian State over the lack of school books in Bulgarian.
The claim will be filed against the Serbian Education Ministry, which has been in charge of providing books for Bulgarian students in the town of Bosilegrad, the Bulgarian Standard daily writes Monday.
The decision was made during a meeting of the parents from a school, which in the last 2 years had 2 classes in grades 1 – 7 each, which are taught in Bulgarian.
The Serbian Education Ministry has set them for failure because it had not hired translators for texts from Serbian to Bulgarian. School books cannot be imported from Bulgaria to be used there because of the different curriculum.
The parents say the lack of such books makes the Bulgarian classes meaningless and warn they will not send their children to school.
Representatives of the Serbian Education Ministry have been invited to the meeting, but no one showed up, prompting the parents to decide to take the case to Court.
They have issued a September 28th deadline before doing so.
As a compromise, they propose that teachers translate several texts in Bulgarian to have something to start with.
Bogdan Nikolov, from the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Center in Bosilegrad, told the Bulgarian National Radio, BNR, Monday how Bulgarians have fought to no avail for 7 years to have the books translated in Bulgarian.
He blasted the Serbian Education Ministry, the National Council of Bulgarian Minorities, the Bosilegrad Mayor and the school's Principal for passing the ball, which will now force the ethnic Bulgarian children to transfer to Serbian classes.
