Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev has reiterated that his left-wing formation "should stop" the country's ruling centrist-right GERB government.

GERB is responsible for 700 000 unemployed and disillusioned people, Stanishev pointed out in a speech on Sunday.

"Today, the most terrifying thing of all is poverty," he said.

Stanishev, who is also the interim president of the Party of European Socialists, stated that the country is currently being ruled through "pressure, monopolism and oligarchic rings."

He expects his party to be the target of a black PR campaign ahead of the 2013 general elections in Bulgaria.

According to the former Bulgarian PM (2005-2009), the Bulgarian Socialist Party's aim would be to "develop the economy, so that new jobs will be created."

Stanishev further praised the so-called "anti-fascist uprising" that took place on September 9 1944. He claimed that the totalitarian communist regime's takeover was "historic," since it put an end to Bulgaria being a "satellite of fascist Germany."
