Former Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov has proclaimed himself a "unifier" of all leftist parties and movements in Bulgaria.
Parvanov, a former chair of the largest Bulgarian leftist formation, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, in the late 1990s, and two-term President of Bulgaria in 2002-2012, spoke Thursday at a forum of the leaders of the Social Democrat movements in Bulgaria on the occasion of the 121st anniversary since the founding of the first left party in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party, in 1891, and the 119th anniversary since its admission to the Socialist International.
"My place is in the Socialist Party, and my role is to unify, not to jump from one party into another," Parvanov told the fellow-leftists on Thursday, thus apparently denying the speculations that he might try to found a new political formation after current BSP leader Sergey Stanishev, his former protege, defeated him in the party elections in May 2012.
"I sincerely hope that this will work out now – that socialists, social democrats, agrarians, and centrists will come together for a powerful coalition this is a chance not only to win the elections but also to consolidate more people around a new policy," Parvanov told the social democrats.
His words are in line with his earlier statement that the present "Coalition for Bulgaria", which consists of the BSP and some marginal leftist parties, needs to be refreshed.
