Surprise Defeat for Bulgaria at Quebec Tennis

Sports | September 20, 2002, Friday // 00:00

Bulgaria's best tennis player Magdalena Maleeva failed to reach the seminals of the Bell Challenge in Quebec after an unexpected defeat by Switzerland's Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian. Switzerland's Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian thrashed third seed Magdalena Maleeva 6-1 6-1 to qualify for the Quebec semifinals. Thus Magi did not manage to repeat the success of her sister Katerina, who won the cup back in 1994. The tough victory over Anousjka van Exel of the Netherlands in the second-round matches (6-4 2-6 6-3) was a hint at the problems that the 27-year -old Bulgarian will have later on. In Quebec second round Germany's Angelika Roesch upset second seed Elena Dementieva 7-6 6-7 6-4.
