Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has said that Bulgarians should not look to Brussels to solve problems with the election process in their country.

"As President I am worried that sometimes we all too easily work against the reputation of our own country," stated Plevneliev Tuesday.

Wednesday the Bulgarian President is organizing a round table to discuss amendments to Bulgaria's Election Code directed at preventing election irregularities.

Bulgaria's October 2011 presidential and municipal elections were marked by a number of violations unprecedented in recent history, with documented reports of vote buying, controlled voting, and procedural irregularities.

"We should refrain from taking our problems outside and complain to others how allegedly undemocratic Bulgaria is," said Plevneliev.

He added that the responsibility to solve the problem lies on Bulgarians themselves and expressed the hope that Wednesday's round table will contribute to that.
